Facts to Determine the Severity of the Plastic Problem

Facts here, facts there, facts everywhere! Wherever we need to change something, we need facts to make that change happen successfully. In today's post, I am going to discuss some facts on the issue of plastic pollution.
  1. The world uses 500 billion plastic bags which require 60 million barrels of crude oil to produce. It endangers marine life and increases the number of plastic bags reaching the ocean. There is an average of 8.3 billion straws reach the ocean annually. This much plastic pollutes the oceans since it produces chemicals like bisphenol A and blocks phytoplankton from producing oxygen.
  2. Burning plastic poses a serious threat to humans and the environment. The toxic gases can cause cancer and releases greenhouse gases which, in turn, causes climate change. When burned, if the fumes are inhaled, it can lead to cancer since the fumes contain toxic substances. The gases produced include carbon dioxide, which causes global warming and finally, climate change. Wondering why icecaps are melting? It was climate change, all the while!
  3. An estimate a 13 million metric tons of plastic reaches the ocean every year. That is like 1 full garbage truck dumping garbage every minute! Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation, and drowning. 1000 turtles die just due by choking in plastic. 5000 turtles die a year in average. Seen a surgical mask floating around in water bodies? Why? Now do you want to add that to the long list of plastic?
I hope these facts has shed some light on the severity of the issue of plastic pollution. Please follow me on Instagram at @parth_dinil06. Enjoy your day!!!
